June is Men’s Health Month – a time to shine a spotlight on the physical and mental well-being of men. Launched in 1994 by the Men’s Health Network, this initiative is all about raising awareness, encouraging prevention, and promoting healthier habits. It’s also a time for open conversations about health—at home, at work, and within our communities.
Why Men’s Health Matters
Here in Ireland, men are facing some serious health challenges. Studies show* that men are more likely than women to experience poorer health outcomes, and have a shorter life expectancy—by around four years on average. Contributing factors include poor nutrition and lifestyle choices (with roughly 8 in 10 men not eating enough fruit and veg),, and a tendency to avoid or delay seeking medical help.
Mental health is also a concern, over three-quarters of deaths by suicide in Ireland are male..
But there is good news: with increased awareness, earlier detection, and small lifestyle changes, many of these issues can be prevented or managed.
