What Is The Thyroid And Where Is It Located?
The thyroid gland is located in the neck and produces thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These regulate the body’s metabolism and are essential to the functioning of many cells in the body.

The release of T3 and T4 is controlled by the levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), which is released from an area of the brain called the pituitary gland. One group of hormones regulates the other – when one is too high it stimulates increased release of the other and vice versa.

When this balance is disrupted it can cause an underactive or overactive thyroid. These problems can emerge gradually over months or even years. Such disorders can be diagnosed and treated early if identified.

What Is The Thyroid Test For?
This test is used to check thyroid function by measuring the level of thyroid hormones in the blood. The individual thyroid test will measure T3, T4 and TSH.

Please note, if you order your thyroid test as part of a combination test package, the lab will only be able to test for T4 and TSH.

Who Is This Test Suitable For?
This test is suitable for anyone over the age of 18 years.

If you are pregnant, we would advise that this service is not suitable for you and you should attend your local GP/ hospital team for thyroid monitoring.

What Are The Common Symptoms of An Underactive Thyroid?
There are many different symptoms as the metabolism of most cells in the body are affected.

Common symptoms include:

  • Fatigue
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Weight gain
  • Constipation
  • Low mood/ lack of motivation
  • Abnormally slow movements or thoughts
  • Muscle aches or cramps
  • Very and flakey skin

  • In older people, it can cause memory problems

An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism or thyrotoxicosis) can lead to a wide variety of symptoms.

To view your results, simply log into your personal account using the “Login” button at the top of this page. Once you have entered your details, you will find your results and details of your previous treatments.

How Long Will it Take to Receive My Results?
It takes An Post up to 3 business days to deliver your home test to our partner lab for analysis. Once the lab receives the sample, it can take up to 5 business days to process the results and send them back to our doctors for review. We usually send the results to your secure patient portal the same day we receive them.
